Was the ginger sourced from Jamaica? How did Jamaica come into play?

I never heard of this disorder until today, and both my parents were young, Black people in the 30s. Dad was from Arkansas and mom from West VA. Glad they weren't drinkers back then. What amazes me is how those bootlegger "chemists" came up with adding a PLASTISIZER as something people could drink! They had to know that chemical would be dangerous. Another sad example of profits over people's lives, and especially poor Black people.
